Best Cigars to Pair With Bulleit Bourbon

Shane K. K's picture

A whiskey recipe dating back to 1830, created by Augustus Bulleit, formed the foundation for the Bulleit bourbon we find on bar shelves nearly everywhere today. Augustus’ great-great-grandson, Tom Bulleit, revived the unusually high rye whiskey in 1987. The mash bill is drawn from two-thirds corn and one-third rye, imparting firm and spicy flavors bartenders love to use in a myriad of cocktails. Bulleit was acquired by spirts giant Diageo in 2001 as part of its purchase of Canada’s largest liquor distiller, Seagram. Bulleit is brought to life in a sprawling state-of-the-art distillery in Shelbyville, Kentucky. Here are the best cigars to pair with Bulleit bourbon when you want to savor the roots of an American institution with a fine smoke.

Bulleit Bourbon & Oliva Serie V

The original Bulleit bourbon owns up to its reputation as a “Frontier Whiskey,” as noted on the label. A unique blend of rye, corn, and barley malt receives special strains of yeast and Kentucky limestone-filtered water. Notes of oak, maple, and nutmeg leave an animated impression on the taste buds before a lingering, dry finish of toffee is conveyed with satin-like texture. A supreme smoke to go with it comes from Oliva Serie V with its full-bodied profile of red and black pepper, leather, cayenne, and wood. A shimmering Cuban-seed wrapper encloses a hearty blend of Nicaraguan Ligero tobaccos in a mix of traditional and bigger ring gauge shapes. Oliva is intense enough to meet the tangy zeal Bulleit delivers head on.

Bulleit Bourbon 10 Year & La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor

A sweet nose of caramel, citrus, and butterscotch introduces the gratifying profile of Bulleit Bourbon 10 Year. Tasting notes of vanilla, dried fruit, and oak reside in every sip, while hints of leather and cherry come into focus around the edges. A long, woody finish follows a sharp rush of flavors.

An oily San Andrés wrapper leaf glistens over a vintage interior of premium Nicaraguan long-fillers in several popular sizes of La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor. A complex profile of black pepper, espresso, and almonds segues into a sweet and zesty finish with notes of dark chocolate and spice. The dark, versatile, and complex taste of the 95-rated Mi Amor supports the riveting flavor of Bulleit 10 Year with luscious and intricate balance.

Bulleit Barrel Strength & San Cristobal Revelation

Bottled straight from the barrel, Bulleit Barrel Strength delivers a direct expression of cinnamon, spice, oak, nutmeg, and maple in a profile that starts hot and smooths into a creamy finish. The extra-proof bourbon shows off lots of pepper with hints of orange peel and brown sugar. Notes of smoked almond, cedar, coffee bean, and baking spices emerge with creamy texture and aroma in a complementary cigar: San Cristobal Revelation. A nutty and rich finish in Revelation encourages the zesty backbone of Barrel Strength to stand out with perfect proportion.

Bulleit Rye & Flor de las Antillas

Bulleit Rye catapulted the brand’s popularity even further with an award-winning expression rye enthusiasts eagerly embrace. Leather, tobacco, vanilla, and cherry aromas enliven the nose before a fierce profile of baking spices and orange zest fits in between a finish of cinnamon and smoke. An all-Nicaraguan blend makes up the 96-rated, former ‘#1 Cigar of the Year’ profile of Flor de las Antillas. A collection of soft box-pressed sizes is finished in a lustrous Sun Grown wrapper. A tapestry of cedar, sweet leather, nuts, and cayenne pepper blesses the palate from beginning to end in a collection of soft box-pressed shapes.

Bulleit Blenders Select & Perdomo 10th Anniversary Maduro

Bulleit Blenders Select boasts an exuberant profile of honey, vanilla bean, fresh fruit, and charred oak with a decadent and creamy finish. This regional release is a hit in select states and sought after by bourbon connoisseurs who enjoy the big influence rye is given in the Bulleit portfolio. An earthy and sweet Maduro wrapper is harvested from select Perdomo estates in Nicaragua and blended over an ample interior of Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos in Perdomo 10th Anniversary Maduro. Tasting notes of espresso, hickory, and black pepper mingle from beginning to end in a chunky, cool-burning collection. Perdomo and Bulleit put on a big finish with creamy and toasted undertones.
