Does a Cigar Have a Sweet Spot?

Premium cigars are made of three tobacco components: the wrapper, the binder, and the filler. Each part shapes the cigar’s anatomy and affects its taste, but the wrapper has more influence than the binder and filler. Some say the wrapper accounts for 60-80% of a cigar’s flavor. When you light a cigar, the tobaccos combust at an even pace, creating the flavor profile you taste when the smoke reaches your palate and nose. As you smoke a cigar, the blend generally intensifies as the heat from the foot of the cigar gets closer to your mouth. That’s why the beginning of a cigar can be remarkably different from the end, begging the question, “Where’s the sweet spot?”

What Is a Sweet Spot?

Essentially, the “sweet spot” is the portion of a cigar that tastes best. We often describe the phases of tasting a cigar by breaking the experience into a beginning, middle, and finish, like a good book. Not all cigars reveal a definitive sweet spot, but for many cigar lovers, it’s easy to point to the portion they enjoyed the most.

The sweet spot often comes in the middle or near the end of a cigar, when the heat, smoke, and oil culminate with greater intensity before the foot of the cigar becomes too hot or too close to your fingertips to continue smoking. The sweet spot doesn’t imply that the other parts of a cigar are bad or inferior. Identifying a sweet spot means finding the moment when a cigar’s flavor and strength reflect perfect balance and harmony on the palate.

Key Factors That Determine the Sweet Spot

Below, we address the main factors that affect a cigar’s sweet spot. Taste is personal, so one cigar’s sweet spot may not be the same for everyone. Plus, one person can enjoy two of the same cigars and come away with two different experiences.

Cigar Size & Shape

Cigars are handcrafted in different shapes and sizes. When a cigarmaker creates a blend in several different cigar shapes, cigar size affects the taste by shifting the sweet spot based on a cigar’s length and ring gauge. Thinner cigars burn hotter and faster than larger ring sizes, and longer cigars are mellower at the start than shorter formats because the heat is farther from your palate when you fire up. For example, the sweet spot for a La Aroma de Cuba Corona will differ markedly from La Aroma de Cuba El Jefe, even though both use the same tobaccos. The 5.5-by-44 Corona burns for 30-40 minutes, while a 7-by-48 El Jefe lasts over an hour. You might experience a crescendo of flavor and aroma in the Corona after 15 or 20 minutes, while the El Jefe reveals its sweet spot after 45 minutes of smoking.

The Blend & Strength

Mild and creamy Connecticut Shade cigars, such as Ashton Classic and Macanudo Café, offer a mellow, consistent taste from beginning to end in every size. The sweet spot in an approachable beginner’s cigar is less dramatic than in stronger smokes blended with loads of Ligero filler tobaccos, for example. Cigars with thick, oily wrappers, like Ecuador Habano, Ecuador Sumatra, or San Andrés varietals, especially dark Oscuro blends, deliver a noticeable uptick in spice and complexity. Powerful cigars with more nicotine surge considerably in strength before they expire. You may reach the sweet spot of a strong cigar sooner than expected, before it becomes too strong at the end.

How Fast You Smoke

You should take your time smoking a premium cigar because the length of time you spend smoking it impacts its intensity. Hurrying to finish a cigar never improves the taste because smoking too fast can make it taste hot and bitter. That’s why you shouldn’t ash a cigar too early or too often. Allow the ash to grow in one- or two-inch increments before tapping it off in the ashtray. The ash insulates the foot of the cigar and restricts the oxygen as it burns, leading to a cooler draw. In other words, take the scenic route to arrive at a cigar’s sweet spot. Pausing for 30 seconds or a full minute between draws lets a cigar’s nuances resonate longer on your palate. And you cannot cut a cigar in half to get to the sweet spot faster. Reaching the sweet spot takes time and patience as you smoke.

Prolong a Cigar’s Sweet Spot with a Drink Pairing

Pairing the right beverage with your cigar will accentuate and prolong its sweet spot. Choose a vintage bourbon, Scotch, or classic cocktail to pair with your favorite smoke and maximize its peak flavor. Even sipping gourmet coffee with a cigar enhances its profile, maximizing your perception of its taste.

Enjoy the Sweet Spot in Your Next Cigar

Recognize the point when the flavor climaxes in your next cigar to mark its sweet spot. Ideally, the draw will be effortless and consistent, leaving a stable ash at the foot, while the taste is rich, complex, and enjoyable, without becoming too intense. You can sustain a cigar’s sweet spot and make it last longer by following our tips: smoke slowly and let the ash develop.
