As Central America’s largest country, the Republic of Nicaragua is a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches, lush tropical forests, volcanic activity, and of course, its magnificent tobacco crop. The diversity of Nicaragua’s geography and culture is reflected in its cigars, as they are recognized the world over as being some of the finest produced. Narrowing a list of the best Nicaraguan cigars down to a manageable number is tough, but here are our top ten from the jewel of Central America:

#1 - La Aroma de Cuba Edicion Especial

La Aroma de Cuba Edicion Especial debuted in 2008 and it won plenty of attention from the critics shortly thereafter with a ‘Top 5’ ranking in Cigar Afcionado. In 2020, Edicion Especial was reblended and repackaged with an updated profile and look. The new version has achieved an even higher 94-point rating for its genuine Cubanesque character. Tasting notes of smoked almonds, leather, cedar, and cocoa display a plethora of Nicaraguan spices. Pepin Garcia blends Edicion Especial from a Cuban-seed wrapper grown in Ecuador and a well-aged interior of select Nicaraguan long-fillers.

#2 - My Father Le Bijou 1922

No Top Ten cigar list would be complete without a tribute to Jose ‘Pepin’ Garcia and his son, Jaime Garcia. The Garcia family is celebrated for a number of top-shelf Nicaraguan brands and it’s not surprising a handful occupies our top ten list. A Cuban-seed Nicaraguan Oscuro wrapper and impeccable Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos set My Father Le Bijou 1922 apart. Hearty tasting notes of black pepper and wood characterize the profile with hints of semi-sweet cocoa and coffee beans. The finish is meaty and intense but nicely balanced. Smoke it on a full stomach.

#3 - Padron 1964 Anniversary

Experience rich, full-bodied flavor with every draw thanks to a premium blend of vintage Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos beneath a glistening, gingerbread-hued Nicaraguan wrapper leaf. Notes of nutmeg, cinnamon, cedar, cocoa, and cayenne pepper please the palate from beginning to end. Padron 1964 Anniversary lives up to its legendary status with unmatched consistency and optimal taste.

#4 - San Cristobal Revelation

Creamy and spicy tasting notes converge with perfect accord in San Cristobal Revelation. An Ecuador Sumatra wrapper displays a seamless milk-chocolate hue around a well-matched selection of Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos. Notes of nuts, spices, cedar, and cocoa create a vibrant medium-bodied profile in a collection of popular box-pressed and big ring gauge shapes.

#5 - Flor de las Antillas

Flor de las Antillas was the first cigar to earn the Garcia family a coveted ‘#1 Cigar of the Year’ title from Cigar Aficionado. The 96-rated blend boasts a premium array of aged Nicaraguan long-fillers beneath a lustrous Sun Grown Nicaraguan wrapper leaf. A medium to full-bodied profile of cedar, cocoa, and cayenne arrives in a collection of cool-burning formats before a creamy and rich finish.

#6 - Oliva Serie V

A bold and spicy profile of wood, black pepper, red pepper, and earth resonates with meaty taste and aroma in Olive Serie V. The 95-rated cigar elevated demand for the Oliva brand quickly thanks to its intense blend of premium Nicaraguan ligero tobaccos and an oily Ecuador Habano wrapper leaf. Oliva Serie V is as popular as ever and is available in a wide collection of classic shapes.

#7 - Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne

Value and approachability reign supreme in the silky, balanced flavor of Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne. An earthy blend of white pepper and leather furnishes hints of coffee and cream that satisfy with amazing consistency. Brand founder Nick Perdomo is well known for creating cigars with magnificent taste and consistency for a great price. Indulge in Nick’s benchmarks for satisfaction and versatility with his bestselling Perdomo 10th Anniversary today.

#8 - Nub

Nub is among the pioneering cigars of the past couple decades thanks to the short fat shapes the brand is rolled in. Cigars as fat as a 64 ring gauge that aren’t a smidgen past 4 inches in length are commonplace today because of Nub. The trailblazing brand began as a trend but is a mainstay thanks to the high standards of quality and taste Nub is known for. Nub cigars are handmade by the award-winning Oliva brand from premium Nicaraguan long-fillers beneath a classic collection of wrapper leaves in four primary blends: Nub Cameroon, Nub Connecticut, Nub Habano, and Nub Maduro. If you’re curious about short and chunky cigars, Nub belongs at the top of your hit list.

#9 - Tatuaje

Tatuaje has been sought after by small-batch cigar fanatics for years. Brand founder Pete Johnson has cultivated a sizeable following of like-minded aficionados over the past decade and a half. The original Tatuaje blend features an oily and dark Ecuador Habano wrapper leaf over a premium handcrafted core of Nicaraguan tobaccos grown by the Garcia family. Full-bodied notes of leather, earth, and wood display a wealth of spices in a series of traditional shapes.

#10 - Liga Privada #9

Liga Privada #9 turns a corner for the Drew Estate brand with a traditional, non-infused profile blended from a host of regional Central American tobaccos. A lustrous, oily Nicaraguan wrapper shows off potent, full-bodied notes of roasted coffee beans and black peppers that deliver a powerful finish with a divine sweetness around the edges.
