MACANUDO BRAND HISTORY
Macanudo represents one of the most recognizable cigar brand names in the world. The first Macanudo cigars were handcrafted in 1968 at the Temple Hall factory in Kingston, Jamaica. The Macanudo brand is now produced in the Dominican Republic and is owned by General Cigar Company. Macanudo debuted in the U.S. market in 1971, quickly becoming a popular premium offering. Seeking to enhance and broaden the burgeoning product’s reputation, General Cigar Company brought in Ramon Cifuentes to blend Macanudo’s core profiles, relying on his past expertise as the chief blender behind the Partagas brand in Cuba. Cifuentes went on to oversee the release of several Cuban heritage blends for the U.S. market under General Cigar Company as they sought to absorb the lucrative demand for cigars in America following the trade embargo with Cuba. Cifuentes was instrumental in developing the Partagas and Bolivar brands within the U.S. for General Cigar, in addition to numerous Macanudo lines.
MACANUDO BRAND OVERVIEW
Due to its broad exposure in the marketplace, Macanudo often serves as an introductory brand for consumers curious about cigar smoking. Macanundo Cafe is the brand’s bestselling product line with more than twenty available formats. The iconic profile of Macanudo Cafe is blended from Dominican and Mexican filler tobaccos beneath a silky Connecticut Shade wrapper, bearing creamy and approachable flavors of toasted nuts and hints of vanilla with a mellow finish. The Robusto-shaped Hyde Park is among the bestselling sizes of the Café blend, along with the Corona-shaped Hampton Court, and the more concentrated profile of the Portofino, rolled in a unique Lancero format. Cigar lovers who enjoy an abbreviated smoking duration in Macanudo Cafe often gravitate to the shorter format of the Rothschild, or Macanudo Ascots, the company’s bestselling cigarillos which can be found in a varied spectrum of retailers, including fine cigar shops, convenience store franchises and even gas stations.
The Macanudo Maduro line utilizes the brand’s reliable recipe of Dominican and Mexican long-filler tobaccos underneath a rich and oily Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper to create approachable tasting notes of chocolate, coffee and cedar. In the past, Macanudo has offered a handful of notable limited editions, including Macanudo Gold Label, a slightly richer version of Cafe; Macanudo 1968, a proprietary blend honoring the brand’s 40th Anniversary; and Macanudo Estate Reserve, which features select Jamaican tobaccos in the blend as an homage to the brand’s previous country of origin. Well over three hundred Macanudo cigars have been reviewed by Cigar Aficionado magazine over the years. Macanudo Cru Royale remains a fan favorite thanks to a 91-rating and placement in the magazine’s ‘Top 25 Cigars of the Year’ following its release. Macanudo Robust garnered a 90-rating with a slightly stronger profile bearing complex notes of leather and earth in attempt to appeal to consumers with more full-bodied preferences. Macanudo cigars enjoy a classic reputation thanks to tremendous distribution and a well-marketed portfolio.
