Southern Draw Cigars
Southern Draw Cigars was founded by husband-and-wife team Robert and Sharon Holt in 2014. The entrepreneurial couple manages their brand with relatives and close friends who proudly acknowledge they are a U.S. Veteran-owned company. Southern Draw cigars are blended and handmade at the AJ Fernandez factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. The Holt family partnered with AJ Fernandez to produce a collection of small-batch cigars that has grown to include several blends drawn from a wide array of distinctive tobaccos. Recent accolades in Cigar Aficionado include high marks for the 92-rated Kudzu, 91-rated Cedrus, and the 90-rated Jacob’s Ladder Brimstone.

SOUTHERN DRAW BRAND HISTORY
Southern Draw brand founders Robert and Sharon Holt are committed to fostering the kinship that brings cigar lovers together. Based in Austin, Texas, the Holt family endorses traditional Southern values and a deep appreciation for the many talented blenders and cigar rollers who craft Southern Draw cigars to the highest standards for quality and consistency. Robert and Sharon Holt express their gratitude by offering financial assistance to the dedicated cigar rollers in and around Estelí, Nicaragua, through their 300 HANDS project.
Southern Draw cigars enjoy a loyal following that continues to grow. Master blender AJ Fernandez was a budding cigar-maker when the Holt family began their search for a manufacturing partner a decade ago. As AJ Fernandez has expanded his farms and factories, he’s been able to successfully grow the small-batch portfolio of Southern Draw cigars with Robert and Sharon Holt.
SOUTHERN DRAW BRAND OVERVIEW
The Southern Draw Cigars lineup includes a host of unique cigars. In 2019, the critics in Cigar Aficionado rated Southern Draw Cedrus 91 points for its hearty profile of coffee bean, leather, toffee, and spices. Cedrus is named for the Cedrus libani wood from which cigar boxes are made. The blend consists of an intricate assemblage of Cuban-seed Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos tucked under a dark Indonesian wrapper.
Southern Draw Jacob’s Ladder is an excellent cigar to taste the nuances a Pennsylvania Broadleaf wrapper provides. Beneath it, well-aged long-fillers from Ecuador and Nicaragua fill out a series of popular sizes that deliver notes of molasses, coffee, cedar, and spice. A stronger version, called Jacob’s Ladder Brimstone, also utilizes an oily Pennsylvania Broadleaf. Dominican and Nicaraguan long-fillers rest inside a broadleaf binder grown in America. Brimstone is flush with notes of black pepper and wood. Hints of raisin, cocoa, and nuts emerge before a full-bodied finish.
The Kudzu blend from Southern Draw earned a 92-point rating with an Oscuro wrapper, grown in Ecuador from Cuban-seed tobaccos, and a zesty blend of vintage Nicaraguan long-fillers. Toffee, molasses, and black pepper layer the palate with nutty and woody nuances.
Southern Draw broadened their audience with a milder cigar called the Rose of Sharon. A silky and seamless Ecuador Connecticut wrapper conceals a succulent interior of Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos. Velvety notes of white pepper, leather, and oak leave an easygoing impression. An additional small-batch version, called the Desert Rose, is rolled from Dominican and Honduran long-fillers and a Nicaraguan binder finished in a golden Connecticut-seed wrapper from Ecuador.
One of Southern Draw’s original releases is Firethorn, blended from a Cuban-seed Rosado wrapper, grown in Ecuador, and a San Andrés binder with Nicaraguan long-fillers. A series of thicker sizes resonate with notes of cashew, caramel, almond, and cocoa throughout a pleasantly woody smoke.
