PERDOMO BRAND HISTORY
Determination is inherent in the philosophy of Nick Perdomo, owner and founder of Tabacalera Perdomo, also known as Perdomo Cigars. By his mid-twenties, Nick knew he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, Silvio Perdomo, and father, Nick Perdomo Sr., both of whom spent many years working in the cigar industry in Cuba.
Silvio Perdomo emigrated from Italy to Cuba, eventually settling roughly thirty miles west of Havana in San José, where he apprenticed at the Cuesta y Cia cigar factory in the early 1930s. Silvio moved on to work at the H. Upmann factory from the late 1930s until 1945 when he transitioned to the famed Partagas factory. There, he remained until 1959. Silvio’s son, Nicholas (Nick Sr.), joined his father at the Partagas factory where the two plied their well-honed craft in the burgeoning Cuban cigar business until Fidel Castro stepped in and overran the nation’s political and economic landscape. The ensuing revolution ultimately led to the torturous imprisonment of Silvio Perdomo for over a decade and the violent, injury-laden escape of Nick Sr., who eventually made his way to Washington D.C. with the aid of the Catholic Church. The family would later settle in Florida.
Driven by the passion for tobacco his father and grandfather displayed, Nick Perdomo started Nick’s Cigar Company, in 1992, as the Cigar Boom was getting underway. Nick worked tirelessly to launch his modest cigar operation, from his garage, while employed full-time as an air traffic controller in Miami. Undeterred by the grueling hours and a constant need to expand, Nick produced cigars at factories in both Miami and later in the historic Ybor City near Tampa, Florida. Limited space and high operating expenses prompted Perdomo to look outside the states to establish a more viable, long-term operation. With his father’s expertise, Nick eventually set up shop in Nicaragua where the company could expand with greater ease and enjoy access to an abundant supply of high-quality tobacco. An early focus on inexpensive “Cuban-counterfeit-themed” releases segued into well-received lines such as Perdomo La Tradicion Cabinet Series, Perdomo2, and the super fat novelty cigar, Inmensa. In the spring of 1999, Nick capitalized on a lucrative opportunity to manufacture the CAO L’Anniversaire Maduro for CAO Cigars, a blend which garnered attention, solid ratings from the critics, and a sales boon for the CAO brand. Nick parlayed this success into growing Perdomo Cigars, which today is home to several Nicaraguan tobacco farms and an impressive, modern cigar factory in Estelí.
PERDOMO BRAND OVERVIEW
Value-minded prices and a consistent focus on quality control have made Perdomo cigars a bestselling brand in premium cigar shops across the country. Nick Perdomo relies on a successful formula of offering most of his blends in Connecticut, Maduro, and Sun Grown wrapper varietals to appeal to cigar lovers with different preferences for strength and flavor.
Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne is the most popular blend in the entire portfolio. This nutty and rich smoke is finished in a blond Connecticut-seed wrapper, and you can find it in every store that carries the brand. Perdomo 10th Anniversary cigars are also available in Maduro and Sun Grown wrappers. The 10th Anniversary line was blended to celebrate the brand’s first decade in business.
In keeping with tradition, Nick introduced his Perdomo 20th Anniversary series to commemorate his brand’s twentieth anniversary. This line is drawn from older tobaccos, many of which are aged in bourbon barrels to achieve a well-rounded sweetness which you can also explore in Connecticut, Maduro, and Sun Grown wrappers.
The Perdomo Double Aged Vintage series is drawn from twelve-year-old tobaccos that spend their final two years resting in charred, white oak bourbon barrels. The flavors range from creamy and nutty, to earthy and sweet, and spicy and leathery profiles, depending on the wrapper selection.
The Perdomo Habano collection features six-year-old Cuban-seed Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos assembled under your choice of a Connecticut wrapper, aged an additional eight months, a Sun Grown wrapper, aged an additional ten months, and a Maduro wrapper, matured for fourteen months. Each blend delivers a smooth, full-flavored smoke with luscious aroma for an approachable price.
One of the best values in the Perdomo portfolio comes from the Lot 23 series. Perdomo Lot 23 cigars are blended from binder and filler tobaccos grown on a single Perdomo family estate in Estelí, Nicaragua, and they’re finished in either a Nicaraguan Corojo wrapper, an Ecuador Connecticut, or a Nicaraguan Maduro. These budget-friendly boxes provide a perfect introduction to Perdomo cigars.
In 2021, Perdomo revived his fattest line cigars, Inmenso Seventy, a pair of blends that come in a Nicaragua Maduro wrapper or Nicaraguan Sun Grown. Each blend is available in a trio of 70-ring-gauge sizes that are 5, 6, or 7 inches long. The Inmenso line was originally available in the early 2000s as somewhat of a gimmick for folks looking for a super-fat smoke. Due to the popularity of extra-chunky cigars today, Nick upgraded the blends and packaging for Inmenso cigars and reintroduced them for fans of big-ring premiums.
Following three successful decades of cigar-making, Nick debuted the Perdomo 30th Anniversary line in 2023. This high-end collection is blended from exclusive reserves of Nick’s oldest tobaccos, some of which have been aged up to fifteen years. Each of the wrapper options, Connecticut, Maduro, and Sun Grown, are aged in bourbon barrels to achieve their refined flavor and aroma. Explore a special cigar blended to honor Nick’s thirtieth anniversary, a milestone he proudly celebrates with his right-hand man, Arthur Kemper, his son Nicholas III, and an entire company of dedicated cigar-rollers and long-tenured employees who’ve grown Perdomo Cigars from a small family operation to one of today’s biggest Nicaraguan brands.
Nick Perdomo often invites customers and retailers to visit his cigar factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, where he offers a personal tour of his farms and blending and manufacturing facilities.
