ALEC BRADLEY BRAND HISTORY
Founder of Alec Bradley Cigars, Alan Rubin, discovered a profound passion for cigars as a consumer in his early twenties. After college, Rubin joined his father in managing the family’s hardware-importing business which he sold in 1996 following years of managed growth. Shortly before the company’s sale, Rubin committed to his next endeavor by incorporating a new cigar business. Taking a cue from his father, Rubin named his company after his sons, Alec and Bradley. With limited exposure to the manufacture of cigars and a great appreciation for the care and craft required to produce them, Rubin began navigating the process of developing his own brand. An emphasis on challenge was apparent from the start as the Cigar Boom of the 1990s had already hit its peak, leaving in its wake a market saturated with too many brands and a tapering demand.
After releasing a golf-themed brand with limited distribution in the late 1990s, Rubin knew he had to reevaluate his business plan with a focus on placing product in premium cigar shops to alleviate debt. At this time, he developed a relationship with Ralph Montero who joined the company in 2000. Through Montero’s background in the cigar industry, Rubin was able to establish connections with cigar-makers, including Henke Kelner (best known for producing Davidoff cigars). Declining production numbers following the Cigar Boom prompted Kelner’s interest in rolling a new brand for Rubin and Montero. Their first project was an inexpensive bundle brand, Occidental Reserve, named for the factory in the Dominican Republic where Kelner’s rollers produced the blend in an effort to gain exposure for the facility. Rubin gambled by sending out samples to 500 cigar retailers without pricing the cigars. Through a series of follow-up calls, a new momentum unfolded as roughly 300 accounts agreed to bring in the new brand.
ALEC BRADLEY BRAND OVERVIEW
High quality and low cost attracted consumers and inspired Rubin’s next releases, Alec Bradley Trilogy and Alec Bradley Maxx, produced at the Raices Cubanas factory in Honduras. A supply of select tobaccos from the Trojes region in the Jalapa Valley in Honduras had been reserved by the Raices factory, initially intended for the Alec Bradley Maxx blend. However, it was deemed too young for the cigar’s release and Rubin continued to set aside and age the crops for an additional time period. By 2007, the tobacco had matured to perfection and was subsequently blended to create Alec Bradley Tempus, a more full-bodied cigar that elevated the company with greater consumer demand. Shortly thereafter, Alec Bradley Tempus Maduro would arrive with a savory earthy profile drawn from a Mexican wrapper and an all-Nicaraguan blend of binder and filler tobaccos. Rubin’s best known and bestselling cigar debuted in 2009 with Alec Bradley Prensado, a 96-rated blend of rich Honduran and Nicaraguan tobaccos nestled beneath an oily Honduran Corojo wrapper. A lush profile of leather, cocoa and spices earned Cigar Aficionado’s ‘#1 Cigar of the Year’ award in 2011 for the Alec Bradley Prensado Churchill. The well-deserved accolade catapulted Alec Bradley into the spotlight among renowned national brands.
The young company made quick adjustments with the Raices factory to amplify production and meet the significant spike in requests for not only Prensado, but several other lines within their portfolio. An ensuing schedule of promotional events would pull both Rubin and Montero away from the factory, which inevitably opened the door for a handful of quality control issues to arise. A concern with consistency became apparent in their cigars by the end of 2012. However, Rubin remained steadfastly committed to the Raices factory and worked arduously with the rollers to resolve any outstanding effects caused by the pressures of an increased production schedule. He candidly recollected the challenges and his company’s pledge to deliver on the reputation of their brand by overcoming any apparent gaps in congruity in a 2016 Cigar Aficionado interview.
The brand continued a rigorous event calendar in addition to a bold advertising campaign timed around new product releases in the wake of the success achieved by Prensado. Alec Bradley Family Blend debuted in 2009 and remains a highly successful release to this day thanks to a 94-rating and a distinctive medium-bodied profile of wood, cocoa and leather with a sweet, zesty finish. The 94-rated Alec Bradley Black Market features a top-selling blend crafted from a Nicaraguan wrapper over a flavorful combination of Honduran, Panamanian, and Sumatran long-filler tobaccos. Alec Bradley New York was originally blended exclusively for the state of New York in an effort to bolster sales in the face of an aggressive 75% tax on premium cigars. An art deco-style design with an illustration of the Empire State Building adorned the bands while the brand’s signature Honduran and Nicaraguan tobaccos delivered a rich profile of caramel, cedar and spices. Alec Bradley American Sun Grown debuted in 2012 and presents a more full-bodied, spicier version of the company’s popular American Classic series. Never afraid to buck more traditional trends, the company has always embraced fun and creative innovation. Alec Bradley Fine & Rare, for example, is an extraordinarily complicated, limited edition cigar featuring ten distinct tobaccos. After spending roughly five years in development, Alec Bradley Mundial was launched, literally, in 2012 as the company sent the blend 18 miles up above the earth attached to a weather balloon, making it the first cigar to enter outer space. Mundial, which translates to “global” in several languages, offered a fitting theme for the unique marketing concept.
Alec Bradley Lineage premiered in 2014 as an extension of Family Blend to commemorate the fact that both of Rubin’s sons were now of legal age to smoke cigars. Named for a farm that produces a tobacco Rubin is particularly fond of, Alec Bradley Coyol was also released in 2014 and received a superb 93-rating with a sweet and malty medium to full-bodied profile. The all-Nicaraguan Alec Bradley Nica Puro shows off a toasted sweetness with medium-bodied flavors of leather and cocoa. Alec Bradley Connecticut entered the market with a distinct appeal for cigar lovers accustomed to an Ecuador Connecticut wrapper, and included a pleasant combination of Nicaraguan and Honduran long-fillers. Ralph Montero was the creative force behind the more recent Alec Bradley Sanctum release, which features a well-rounded, four-country mix of tobaccos with a medium to full-bodied profile of white pepper and almonds. With a growing portfolio of well-developed blends, the brand’s introductory-priced Alec Bradley White Gold has also achieved a solid core of enthusiasts over the past couple of years with a reliable mix of short-filler tobaccos and an Ecuador Connecticut wrapper. White Gold is accessible to a broad segment of consumers with prices that range between $30-$40 for a full box.
