SAN CRISTOBAL BRAND HISTORY

San Cristobal debuted in 2007 under the Ashton brand portfolio and marked the beginning of the company’s mutual endeavors with a now legendary blender. Enter: Jose ‘Pepin’ Garcia. Simply ‘Pepin,’ as he is often called, immigrated to the U.S. from Central America after leaving Cuba where he spent many decades rolling, blending, and training others to craft premium Cuban cigars. Having overseen the production of iconic Cuban brands such as Montecristo, Cohiba, and Romeo y Julieta, Pepin cemented his reputation as a revered cigar-maker.

Despite starting essentially from scratch upon his arrival in Miami, Pepin would quickly find a welcoming home in the premium U.S. cigar market. With his son, Jaime Garcia, and daughter, Janny Garcia, Pepin began a small Miami-based cigar-making operation where early releases included his namesake brand, Don Pepin Garcia, in addition to the young boutique line, Tatuaje, rolled for Pete Johnson. Initially, the Garcias’ cigars were made in small batches by a handful of talented rollers. High ratings and rapid demand earned the family a noticeable degree of attention. Many premium cigar shops wanted to carry Pepin-made cigars, but there were only so many to go around.

As management at Ashton conducted a comprehensive search for a new cigar-making partner, their quest led them to a dozen cigar factories throughout the Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Nicaragua before their paths crossed with Pepin Garcia in Miami. Despite a pronounced language barrier, the folks at Ashton discovered immediate chemistry with the Garcias when they explored the potential of releasing a Pepin-made brand. The initial samples were more than convincing and plans were made. While the Garcias had truly been humbled by the success of their early brands, making cigars for Ashton opened the doors for production on a much larger scale.

Having secured trademarks for the San Cristobal brand decades earlier, management at Ashton selected the marquee for its maiden Pepin-made release. Colorful, vivid artwork depicting a parrot set in a tropical landscape adorned the boxes and the bands. In many ways, the branding reflects the rich, complex and contemplative profile the original San Cristobal blend possesses. A succulent Nicaraguan wrapper leaf embraces an earthy interior of all-Nicaraguan tobaccos that beam with signature Garcia family spices. Rave reviews and the brand’s wild and uplifting presentation distinguished San Cristobal from a myriad of contemporary brands caught in a loop of less-inspiring, macabre marketing gimmicks with a fixation on skulls, crossbones, and darker themes prepared to elicit shock.

As San Cristobal took off and the Garcias began to create new cigars for their recently christened My Father Cigars portfolio in 2008-09, the family opened a sprawling new cigar-making facility in Estelí, Nicaragua to meet increased demand. Ashton was honored to be the factory’s first official client with San Cristobal. Many Pepin-made Nicaraguan cigars exhibit an enhanced potency and reveal signature flavors that are distinct to tobaccos grown in the nation’s rich volcanic soils. The Garcia family has readily embraced the region’s unique character where they now grow an extensive variety of tobaccos for San Cristobal, as well as their own brands, on farms they own. Their success in Nicaragua has vastly transformed the landscape in and around Estelí with their now-booming cigar-making operation. Much investment and economic development in the region has followed as a result.

San Cristobal embodies a return to romance, optimism and celebration, not only in its branding, but also in the superlative flavor and aroma Pepin delivers in spades. Today, San Cristobal is a top-rated brand with growing portfolio of blends that a number of aficionados applaud. The brand is exclusively handcrafted in Estelí, Nicaragua in the Garcia family’s esteemed My Father Cigars S.A. factory from select tobaccos grown on the Garcias’ Nicaraguan estates.

SAN CRISTOBAL BRAND OVERVIEW

In addition to the inaugural all-Nicaraguan San Cristobal blend, the brand has released a versatile collection of patiently aged, premium cigars. In 2011, San Cristobal Elegancia debuted with a silky Ecuador Connecticut wrapper over a creamy, balanced core of Nicaraguan long-fillers. The blend immediately caught on and displayed Pepin’s ability to craft a milder cigar with more approachable flavors. Notes of white pepper, nuts and spices form a tremendous introduction to Nicaraguan cigars for consumers who prefer a less intense profile.

Perhaps the brand’s fastest-selling line, San Cristobal Revelation was unveiled in 2013. An Ecuador Sumatra wrapper leaf covers select Nicaraguan tobaccos that yield flavors of caramel and spice with a tangy and earthy finish. The blend has received four 92-point ratings from Cigar Aficionado.

In 2015, an ultra-rare limited edition premiered, San Cristobal Ovation. The small-batch blend is released in select quantities in a handful of classic formats. Production is limited due to the rarity and extensive age of the cigar’s shimmering wrapper leaf from San Andres and a rich interior of Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos procured from prized Garcia family fields. The names of each size, Decadence, Opulence, and Eminence, reflect the cigar’s decadent, bull-bodied profile of hickory, leather, and cedar with a distinct creaminess, uncharacteristic of blends that exhibit such depth.

San Cristobal Quintessence is handcrafted from a caramel-hued Cuban-seed wrapper leaf grown in Ecuador over a refined, buy potent center of premium, aged Nicaraguan tobaccos. Notes of molasses, pepper, and wood reveal a profile that is ideal for after dinner or in conjunction with a top-shelf bourbon or scotch.

San Cristobal cigars show off a marvelous collection of rich, but well-rounded and refined flavors. The brand is also an amazing value with many cigars falling in the $7-10 price range. Even the highly limited San Cristobal Ovation is a remarkable find for roughly $15, given the thorough fermentation every leaf receives. Add San Cristobal to your humidor today and prepare to reflect on your day over the brand’s premium flavors and aromas.
